Do I Have to Remove Drywall to Rewire a House?

Do I Have to Remove Drywall to Rewire a House?

Not always — but in many cases, yes. Whether drywall removal is required depends on the scope of the rewiring and the construction of the house. A full rewire of an older home typically requires opening walls at key locations. However, skilled electricians use fish tape, flex drill bits, and low-voltage cut-in boxes to minimize the number of wall openings. Modern rewiring techniques can significantly reduce the amount of drywall work compared to what was needed twenty years ago.

When Drywall Removal Is Typically Required

  • Replacing old aluminum or knob-and-tube wiring throughout the house
  • Adding new circuits that must run through finished walls to reach the panel
  • Installing panels or subpanels in finished areas
  • Running circuits through fire-blocked walls or at floor/ceiling transitions
  • Upgrading to grounded wiring in a home that has no existing ground conductors

Low-Impact Techniques Electricians Use

  • Flex drill bits and right-angle drilling to run wire through cavities without opening surfaces
  • Fish tape fed through small access holes to pull wire across long runs
  • Running new circuits through existing conduit where present
  • Using surface-mounted conduit (wiremold) in finished spaces where fishing is not practical
  • Strategic access holes at top plates, bottom plates, and near junction boxes that can be patched cleanly

What to Expect After

Electrical work that requires wall access will leave holes that must be patched and painted. Your electrician is typically responsible for the electrical rough-in; drywall patching and finishing is often a separate trade or homeowner task. Discuss who will handle patching before the work begins so there are no surprises about the finished appearance.

EZSMART uses low-impact rewiring methods to minimize wall disruption across Ontario. Contact us to discuss your rewiring project and what level of wall access will be needed.
