How to Clean Corroded Battery Terminals on Tools
Corrosion on battery terminals is one of the most common reasons power tools and battery-powered devices stop working. The white or blue-green crust that builds up on terminals is typically caused by electrolyte leakage or a chemical reaction between the battery and the metal contacts. Cleaning corroded terminals is a straightforward task that can restore function to devices you might otherwise discard.
Safety Before You Start
- Wear rubber or nitrile gloves — battery corrosion contains acidic or alkaline compounds that irritate skin
- Wear safety glasses to protect against flaking debris or any residual battery electrolyte
- Work in a ventilated area, especially when using acidic cleaning agents
- Dispose of heavily corroded batteries in an approved battery recycling bin, not the regular garbage
What You Need
- Baking soda
- Water
- Old toothbrush or small stiff-bristle brush
- Cotton swabs for tight spaces
- Clean dry cloth or paper towel
- Sandpaper (fine grit) or pencil eraser for stubborn residue
Step-by-Step Cleaning Method
- Remove the batteries from the device and set them aside
- Mix a small amount of baking soda with just enough water to make a thick paste — baking soda neutralizes acidic battery corrosion
- Apply the paste to the corroded terminals with the toothbrush
- Scrub gently in a circular motion to loosen the corrosion — you will see some fizzing as the baking soda reacts with the acid
- Use a cotton swab to work into recessed contact areas
- Wipe away all residue with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly with a clean dry cloth
- For stubborn residue that remains after cleaning, gently rub the terminal contact surface with fine sandpaper or a pencil eraser to expose clean metal
- Allow the terminals to dry completely before inserting new batteries
For Alkaline Battery Corrosion
Standard alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V) leak potassium hydroxide, which is a base, not an acid. Baking soda still works to neutralize this and loosen the residue. If the corrosion is stubborn, a small amount of white vinegar can help dissolve it. Apply with a cotton swab, allow to sit for a minute, then scrub and dry.
When the Terminals Are Too Damaged to Save
If the metal terminal contacts are deeply pitted, cracked, or missing material, cleaning will not restore reliable contact. In this case, the battery compartment or the device needs to be replaced. For rechargeable power tool battery packs with corroded cells, do not attempt to open or repair them — take them to a battery recycling depot.
