How Much Does It Cost to Install a Duct Smoke Detector in Ontario?

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Duct Smoke Detector in Ontario?

Duct smoke detectors are installed inside HVAC ductwork to detect smoke before it can be circulated through a building’s ventilation system. They are required by the Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code in commercial buildings, multi-unit residential buildings, and certain other occupancy types. Here is what duct smoke detector installation costs in Ontario.

Duct Smoke Detector Installation Cost in Ontario

Installing a duct smoke detector in Ontario costs $150 for labour, plus the cost of the detector unit. The detector device is purchased separately. The installation price covers the labour to mount the detector housing in the ductwork, run the required wiring, and connect it to the building’s fire alarm or HVAC control system.

What Is a Duct Smoke Detector?

A duct smoke detector is a device installed directly into an air handling unit or supply/return duct. When it detects smoke in the airstream, it triggers an alarm and typically shuts down the HVAC system to prevent smoke from spreading through the ductwork to other areas of the building.

Unlike standard smoke alarms, duct smoke detectors are not a substitute for room-level smoke detection. They serve a specific function within the HVAC system and are evaluated separately by the authority having jurisdiction — typically the local fire department or building department.

When Are Duct Smoke Detectors Required in Ontario?

The Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code specify where duct smoke detectors are required. Common applications include:

  • Commercial buildings with central air handling units above a specified airflow capacity
  • Multi-unit residential buildings (condominiums and apartments) with shared HVAC systems
  • Institutional occupancies such as schools, hospitals, and care facilities
  • Buildings with return air systems that serve multiple fire compartments

Duct smoke detector requirements depend on the building occupancy type, HVAC system design, and applicable code edition. Your licensed electrical contractor and the local authority having jurisdiction wi[l confirm what is required for your specific installation.

Does Duct Smoke Detector Installation Require an ESA Permit in Ontario?

Yes. Duct smoke detectors involve wiring connected to fire alarm systems and HVAC controls, and the installation is regulated electrical work under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC). An ESA permit is required, and the installation must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor.

In buildings with a fire alarm system, duct smoke detector wiring must also comply with the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code and may require sign-off from the local fire department in addition to the ESA inspection.
