How to Safely Remove a Broken Light Bulb from a Socket

A broken light bulb stuck in a socket is a common household problem that becomes dangerous when handled incorrectly. The glass is sharp, the metal base can retain a sharp edge, and — critically — the socket may still be live if the circuit was not properly de-energized before the bulb broke. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) in Ontario identifies improper handling of broken bulbs as a source of both laceration injuries and electrical shock.

How to Safely Remove a Broken Light Bulb from a Socket

Step 1: De-Energize the Socket Before Touching Anything

• Turn off the light switch — but do not rely on this alone (switch may be wired to the neutral)
• Turn off the circuit breaker for that circuit – the only reliable method
• Verify with a non-contact voltage tester before touching anything

Removal Methods

When the metal base is intact: Wear thick leather or rubber gloves and safety glasses. Use needle-nose otr locking pliers to grip the metal base and turn counter-clockwise.

When only the metal base remains: (1) Potato method: press cut surface firmly in and turn counter-clockwise. (2) Broken bulb remover tool from hardware store. (3) Needle-nose pliers inserted into the open base, jaws opened to grip interior walls.

When to Call an ESA-Licensed Electrician

• Cannot confirm the socket is de-energized
• Base is corroded and will not move
• Fixture shows signs of overheating or arcing
• Socket contact is bent or damaged
• Fixture is in a wet location with possible moisture damage
