Why Is My Electrical Cord Hot to the Touch?

An electrical cord that is hot to the touch is not normal. Cords are designed to carry current with minimal heat generation under normal load — a cord that is noticeably warm indicates that resistance somewhere in the current path has increased beyond its design specification. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) identifies hot cords as a warning sign of a developing electrical hazard.

Why Is My Electrical Cord Hot to the Touch?

Cord Warm Along Its Entire Length

Carrying more current than rated for. Common causes:

• Cord rated for lower current than the device requires
• Cord coiled under load (cannot dissipate heat normally)
• Cord run under a rug or behind furniture

Cord Warm at a Specific Point

High-resistance point at that location — the most dangerous type. Causes:

• Internal strand breaks from repeated bending
• Pinched cord under furniture or in a door
• Pasep physical damage at a point along the cord

Cord Warm at the Plug End

Almost always a connection problem. Causes:

• Loose outlet with worn contacts — replace the outlet
• Oxidized or corroded plug blades
• Plug not seated fully in the outlet

When to Call an Electrician

If the cord is correctly rated and not coiled and still runs warm, the problem is in the outlet or circuit. Call an ESA-licensed electrician if the outlet itself feels warm, multiple cords in the same area are warm, or the wall plate near an outlet is warm.
