A GFCI receptacle that trips and will not reset — or< that resets briefly and trips again immediately is one of the most common electrical service calls in Ontario homes. The behaviour is often misread as a faulty GFCI device, but in most cases the GFCI is doing exactly what it is designed to do: detecting a ground fault or a wiring error and cutting power to prevent a shock hazard.
Unplug all devices from the GFCI face and from any downstream outlets it protects. Press the reset button firmly. If it latches, plug appliances back in one at a time to identify which one triggered the trip. In about 60% of service calls, the fault is in an appliance, not the wiring.
If any GFCI-protected outlets are outdoors, in the garage, or in a wet area, inspect each for water intrusion or condensation. Allow the box to dry completely, then attempt reset. Replace damaged weatherproof covers.
A GFCI wired with line and load connections reversed will not function correctly. The LINE terminals must receive the incoming hot (black) and neutral (white) conductors from the panel side. If reversed, swap the connections with the breaker off.
If the GFCI resets with downstream outlets disconnected but trips when reconnected, the fault is in the downstream circuit wiring or a failed outlet. Identifying a fault in fixed wiring involves handling energized wiring and requires an ESA-licensed electrician.
