Why Is My Breaker Panel Making a Buzzing or Crackling Noise?
A healthy electrical panel is silent. If yours has started to buzz, hum, crackle, or hiss, something inside is arcing, vibrating loose, or overheating, and none of those are things you want to sleep next to. This guide covers exactly what a buzzing or crackling breaker panel means, how urgent it is, and what to do in your Toronto or GTA home tonight.
Why is my breaker panel making a buzzing or crackling noise?
The most common causes are a loose breaker on the bus bar, a failing breaker itself, a loose incoming service connection, or a partial short causing continuous arcing. All of them are potentially dangerous, and any audible noise from a panel is treated as an urgent service call. Kill power at the main disconnect if you can safely reach it, keep everyone away from the panel, and call an ESA-licensed electrician immediately.
Any of the following make it a same-hour emergency, not a same-day one:
The buzz or crackle comes with a burning smell.
The panel cover, dead front, or any breaker is warm or hot to the touch.
You see smoke, scorching, or discolouration on or around the panel.
Lights are flickering or dimming across multiple circuits.
You have received a shock touching an appliance or a switch on any circuit.
In any of those cases, get out of the house first and call 911 second. A panel fire is not a wait-and-see event.
The most common causes of panel noise
In our GTA service calls, the noise almost always traces back to one of the following:
A loose breaker on the bus bar. Breakers clip onto a metal bar. If the clip loosens over time, the connection arcs 120 times per second, producing a steady hum or buzz.
A failing breaker. Internal contacts inside a worn breaker can arc without tripping.
A loose neutral or ground. A lug that has vibrated loose over the years lets current jump the gap.
A high-current appliance start-up. Very short buzzes when a big motor kicks on (AC compressor, dryer, well pump) can be normal. Continuous buzz is not.
A defective or recalled panel. Certain older panel brands are known to arc internally and are on ESA’s watch list.
Water intrusion. Moisture from a leaking wall, a wet basement, or an outdoor line entry corrodes contacts and generates arcing noise.
The Ontario Electrical Safety Code treats a panel as the single most safety-critical piece of equipment in a home. Its integrity is protected by torque specs on every terminal, minimum clearance requirements, and mandatory bonding at the service entrance. Any noise coming out of it means one of those specifications is now out of spec.
Buzzing versus crackling versus humming
The specific sound is a diagnostic clue.
A soft, low, continuous hum is often the transformer step-down noise of an incoming service under heavy load. Usually harmless, but should still be verified.
A steady buzz that gets louder when appliances kick on almost always means a loose or arcing breaker or bus connection.
A crackling or popping sound means the arc is intermittent and strong enough to eject metal or char plastic — the most dangerous version.
A hissing sound is a sign of a corona discharge or an arcing lug carrying high current. Emergency.
A brief buzz on start-up of a large motor, gone in one second, is often normal.
If you cannot tell which sound you have, record it on your phone. The recording alone is often enough for an electrician to prioritize the call.
What not to do
Do not open the panel deadfront cover yourself. Behind that cover is live 240 V bus bar with no insulation. This is not a DIY diagnostic.
Do not tighten breakers or lugs yourself. Torque specs matter and over-tightening can cause more arcing.
Do not ignore it because everything still works. Panels rarely fail suddenly. The buzz is the warning stage.
The Electrical Safety Authority’s annual Ontario Electrical Safety Report consistently identifies electrical distribution equipment (panels, breakers, service conductors) among the top ignition sources for residential fires in the province. Panels do not usually fail overnight — they warn first.

Most GTA homeowners have no idea what their panel sounds like on a normal day, so when a buzz shows up they cannot tell if it is new.
