    Can You Plug a Space Heater Into an Extension Cord?

    Every fall we get the same call from Toronto and GTA homeowners: is it okay to run a space heater through an extension cord because the nearest outlet is on the other side of the room? The short answer is no. It is one of the fastest ways to melt an outlet, ignite a cord, and lose a bedroom to fire. This guide explains why, what the Ontario code and Health Canada say, and what to do instead.

    Can you plug a space heater into an extension cord?

    No. Health Canada, the Electrical Safety Authority, and every space heater manufacturer we have ever seen warn against it, and for good reason. A 1,500-watt space heater draws around 12.5 amps continuously, which is the rated ceiling for a 15-amp household circuit. Any extension cord in the loop adds resistance, generates heat, and turns a marginally safe setup into a fire waiting to happen. Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, on their own circuit if possible.

    This is not overcautious code-thumping. It is the reason so many outlets we replace between November and March look like this melted mess.

    Why extension cords cannot handle space heaters

    Three physical realities make the extension cord and the space heater a bad match.

    • Continuous versus intermittent load. Most household appliances draw high current for seconds. A kettle boils, a hair dryer runs three minutes, a microwave hums for two. A space heater draws maximum current continuously for hours. Cords, connectors, and outlets rated for intermittent loads overheat under continuous ones.
    • Voltage drop and resistance heating. A cheap 16-gauge extension cord under 12.5 amps of continuous load can lose several volts across its length, and every one of those lost volts turns into heat inside the cord. Longer or thinner cords make it worse.
    • Loose plug-to-cord connections. The male end of the space heater and the female receptacle of the extension cord meet at four small metal contacts. Under continuous load those contacts glow, char, and eventually weld or arc. That is the classic melted-plug photo you see on fire prevention posters.

    The Electrical Safety Authority’s annual Ontario Electrical Safety Report consistently identifies portable heaters and extension cords as high-risk contributors to residential fires and shock injuries. The Office of the Fire Marshal ranks portable heaters near the top of the winter fire-cause list in Ontario. Every winter it is the same story.

    What the Ontario code and safety authorities actually say

    The Ontario Electrical Safety Code treats extension cords as temporary wiring. Using them for a permanent, continuous load like a space heater falls outside that permitted use. Health Canada’s product safety advisories echo the same rule. Manufacturer manuals for name-brand heaters such as Dyson, DeLonghi, Vornado, and Honeywell all include the warning — the language varies slightly, but the meaning is the same: plug directly into a wall outlet.

    If a landlord or insurance carrier in Ontario finds that a fire started at a space-heater-and-extension-cord combo, coverage disputes are extremely common. That risk alone is worth the ten-minute alternative below.

    Power bars, surge strips, and multi-plugs are just as bad

    Do not plug a space heater into any of these:

    • A power bar or plug strip. Same physics as a cord, plus the strip’s tiny internal wiring gets hotter faster.
    • A surge protector. Surge protectors are designed to clamp fast transient spikes, not to carry 12.5 amps continuously.
    • A cube tap or triple-tap adapter. These have zero overcurrent protection and only 14- or 16-gauge internal traces.
    • A smart plug or Wi-Fi outlet. Most consumer smart plugs are rated for 10 amps or less — below what a space heater draws.

    The only accessory a space heater should ever touch is the wall receptacle it plugs into.

    What to do if the outlet is too far away

    Almost every extension-cord-and-heater situation we get called about started because the nearest outlet was on the wrong wall. Real fixes, in order of cost:

    1. Move the heater, not the cord. Position it closer to the outlet even if the room layout gets awkward. Direct-to-wall is non-negotiable.
    2. Rearrange furniture. Free up an outlet closer to where you actually spend time.
    3. Add a new receptacle on a new dedicated 15- or 20-amp circuit. This is the correct long-term fix and it also protects you from having to plug in an oversized load on the same circuit as your bedroom lights and TV.
    4. Consider a permanent heating solution. Wall-mounted electric heaters, ductless mini-splits, and heat pumps are all safer than a portable heater run daily through the winter.

    Warning signs your heater setup is already unsafe

    Even if you have been running a heater on a cord for years without incident, any of these signs means unplug it right now:

    • The plug is warm or hot to the touch.
    • The extension cord is warm anywhere along its length.
    • Any smell of burning plastic near the outlet or cord.
    • The outlet faceplate is discoloured or scorched.
    • Your breaker for that room has tripped more than once this season.

    Expert tip from our ESA-licensed electricians

    If you are running a space heater every winter in the same room, treat it as evidence that room needs a real heating solution, not a nicer extension cord. In our GTA calls, the most common melted outlet scenario is a bedroom with an underpowered baseboard heater plus a 1,500 W plug-in unit on a 15-amp circuit shared with a TV and a phone charger. A dedicated 20-amp circuit with an AFCI/GFCI dual-function breaker solves the fire risk permanently for a fraction of what a fire restoration costs.
