No. Health Canada, the Electrical Safety Authority, and every space heater manufacturer we have ever seen warn against it, and for good reason. A 1,500-watt space heater draws around 12.5 amps continuously, which is the rated ceiling for a 15-amp household circuit. Any extension cord in the loop adds resistance, generates heat, and turns a marginally safe setup into a fire waiting to happen. Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, on their own circuit if possible.

Three physical realities make the extension cord and the space heater a bad match.

The Ontario Electrical Safety Code treats extension cords as temporary wiring. Using them for a permanent, continuous load like a space heater falls outside that permitted use. Manufacturer manuals for name-brand heaters such as Dyson, DeLonghi, Vornado, and Honeywell all include the warning — the language varies slightly, but the meaning is the same: plug directly into a wall outlet.
If a landlord or insurance carrier in Ontario finds that a fire started at a space-heater-and-extension-cord combo, coverage disputes are extremely common. That risk alone is worth the ten-minute alternative below.
