Here is a breakdown of why this happens and how to troubleshoot the cause.
In many homes, circuits are “split” or “multi-wire.” If you lose one of the main legs of power coming into your home (common during storms or equipment failure), you might experience a situation where half the outlets in the house work, and the other half do not, or where lights work but high-draw appliances fail.
The Symptom: Your lights may be dimmer than usual or flicker when you turn on a heavy appliance, and your heavy-duty appliances (like refrigerators or ovens) won’t start.
The Danger: This is a serious electrical issue. Turn off your main breaker immediately and contact a utility provider or a licensed electrician, as this can damage sensitive electronics.
Your appliances might be on a circuit protected by a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) or an AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker that has tripped.
The Mechanism: Unlike a standard breaker that only trips during a surge, these devices trip due to tiny imbalances (like moisture or small arcs).
The Troubleshooting: Check your breaker panel for a breaker with a “Test” button that has shifted to the middle position. Also, check all nearby outlets; if one GFCI outlet in a series is tripped, it will kill the power to all downstream outlets, rendering appliances plugged into them “dead” even though the main breaker is fine.
This is one of the most dangerous electrical faults. If the neutral wire—the “return” path for electricity—becomes loose or corroded at the panel or in a junction box, you may experience “floating voltage.”
Why it kills appliances: Electricity can’t complete its path, so it “floats” around, sometimes causing low voltage (too low for appliances to run) or massive surges (high enough to destroy electronics).
The Signs: If you notice your lights getting extremely bright (or dimming significantly) when you turn on an appliance, you have a loose neutral. Shut off your power and call a professional immediately.
We often forget the “middle-man.” If your appliances are plugged into a power strip or surge protector, that device itself may have failed.
The Check: Surge protectors have a built-in fuse or breaker. If they have taken a hit from a previous power surge, the “protection” element may have blown, cutting power to the strip permanently. Plug the appliance directly into a known-working wall outlet to rule this out.
If only one appliance isn’t working, it might have its own internal thermal fuse that has tripped.
The Scenario: Many modern appliances (like coffee makers, space heaters, or hair dryers) have safety sensors that cut power if the unit overheats. If the appliance is cool to the touch but still won’t turn on, it may have a blown internal fuse.
As a master electrician, I emphasize that voltage and amperage are different. You might be able to measure 120V with a multimeter, but the moment you try to draw power (the load), the voltage drops to zero because of a poor connection. This is why “non-contact” testers can be misleading—they show voltage but not capacity. If your lights work but your appliances don’t, your circuit has enough capacity for a few watts (lights) but fails under the load of an appliance (amps). This almost always indicates a loose connection somewhere between your panel and that outlet.
