How to Wire a Ring Doorbell Without an Existing Chime

How to Wire a Ring Doorbell Without an Existing Chime

Ring video doorbells can operate with or without a traditional wired chime. If your home has no existing doorbell wiring — common in newer Ontario homes, condos, or homes where the old doorbell was removed — you have two options: run new low-voltage wiring to power the doorbell, or use a battery-powered Ring model that requires no wiring at all.

Battery-Powered Ring Doorbells (No Wiring Required)

  • Ring Video Doorbell (standard), Ring Video Doorbell 2, and Ring Video Doorbell 3 all operate on a rechargeable battery — no wiring needed
  • The doorbell mounts to any exterior surface with the included screws. In Canada, Ring provides a security screw that requires their included tool, making removal harder
  • Battery life varies from one to six months depending on motion activity and temperature — cold Ontario winters reduce battery performance significantly
  • No chime is required; the Ring app sends push notifications to your phone. A Ring Chime or Chime Pro (plug-in device, no wiring) can be added for an audible alert inside the home

Hardwired Ring Doorbells Without a Traditional Chime

  • Hardwired Ring models (Ring Video Doorbell Pro, Pro 2, Elite) require a 16–24V AC transformer connected to the doorbell terminals
  • If no chime or transformer exists, a licensed electrician can run new low-voltage wiring from a doorbell transformer installed at the electrical panel or mounted in an accessible location
  • Ring sells a Plug-in Adapter that connects to a standard 120V outlet and powers the Pro doorbell without a transformer — useful when an outlet is nearby but no doorbell wiring exists
  • The hardwired connection keeps the battery continuously topped up, eliminating seasonal recharging

EZSMART installs Ring and other smart video doorbells in Ontario homes, including running new low-voltage doorbell wiring when none exists. Contact us if you want a hardwired installation or need a transformer added to support a Pro model.
