Does a Generator Automatically Turn On When the Power Goes Out?

Does a Generator Automatically Turn On When the Power Goes Out?

Whether a generator starts automatically during a power outage depends entirely on the type of generator installed. Portable generators require manual starting. Standby generators with an automatic transfer switch (ATS) start automatically within seconds of detecting a utility outage — without any action from the homeowner.

Portable Generators

  • Must be started manually — pulled cord, push-button, or key start depending on the model
  • Must be connected to the house through a transfer switch or interlock kit before you can safely power circuits inside the home
  • Running a portable generator without a transfer switch and back-feeding through an outlet is illegal and dangerous — it can energize utility lines and kill a lineworker restoring power
  • Require refuelling during extended outages

Standby Generators with Automatic Transfer Switch

  • The ATS monitors utility power continuously. When it detects an outage, it signals the generator to start
  • Most standby generators reach operating speed and accept load within 10–30 seconds
  • The ATS then disconnects the house from the utility and connects the generator — grid isolation happens automatically before the house is powered
  • When utility power returns and stabilizes, the ATS transfers back to the grid and the generator shuts down after a cool-down period
  • Run on natural gas or propane, so no manual refuelling required during outages

Installing a standby generator requires a licensed electrician to install the automatic transfer switch and connect the generator to the home’s electrical system. EZSMART installs standby generators and ATS systems across Ontario. Contact us to assess your home’s load requirements and generator sizing.
