Are Smart Light Bulbs Better Than Smart Switches?
Are Smart Light Bulbs Better Than Smart Switches?
Smart bulbs and smart switches both let you control lighting from an app or voice assistant, but they accomplish this in different ways with different trade-offs. The better choice depends on how your home is wired, how many bulbs are in each fixture, and whether you want control at the switch plate or only through your phone.
Smart Bulbs
- How they work: Each bulb contains its own wireless radio (Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Z-Wave). The switch remains on and the bulb receives commands directly
- Advantage: No wiring required — screw in and configure. Works in rental units and houses without neutral wires at the switch
- Disadvantage: If someone turns off the wall switch, the bulb loses power and becomes unresponsive to app and voice commands until the switch is turned back on. Multiple bulbs in one fixture multiply the cost
- Best for: Standalone lamps, single-bulb fixtures, or situations where wiring changes are not practical
Smart Switches
- How they work: The switch controls the circuit. Any bulb in the fixture — including standard non-smart bulbs — receives smart control through the switch
- Advantage: One switch controls all bulbs in the fixture. Physical switch operation works normally. Cost scales better for multi-bulb fixtures
- Disadvantage: Installation requires a neutral wire at the switch location. Older Ontario homes wired with two-wire (no neutral) switch loops may require a wiring upgrade or a specific no-neutral smart switch model. Installation must be done correctly to avoid issues
- Best for: Permanently wired fixtures with multiple bulbs, homes where consistent physical switch operation matters
Smart switch installation in an older home may require adding a neutral wire to the switch box. EZSMART installs smart switches and upgrades switch wiring across Ontario. Contact us if your home needs neutral wires added to existing switch locations to support smart switch installation.
