What to Do If You Cut a Live Wire by Accident

Cutting a live wire is a serious electrical hazard that can cause electrocution, arc flash, or fire. The immediate priority is to break the circuit before touching anything. The actions you take in the first few seconds determine whether the incident stays minor or becomes fatal.

Immediate Steps

• Do not touch the cut wire ends — both ends are energized and can conduct current through your body to ground
• Do not attempt to hold the ends together or pull them apart with your hands
• Go to your electrical panel immediately and turn off the breaker for that circuit. If you do not know which breaker controls that area, turn off the main breaker
• If you cannot reach the panel safely, call 911 — do not attempt to work near a live cut wire

After the Power Is Off

• Inspect the cut wire ends for visible damage — scorching, melted insulation, or burn marks indicate arcing occurred when the wire was cut
• Do not restore power to that circuit until a licensed electrician has assessed the damage and repaired or replaced the wire
• If sparking or smoke occurred at the cut point, check the surrounding area (wall cavity, ceiling, floor) for signs of heat damage or smouldering material before leaving the area

A cut wire inside a wall or ceiling requires access to both ends to make a proper repair. In most jurisdictions, including Ontario, splices inside a wall cavity must be made in an accessible junction box — you cannot simply twist the wires together and close the wall.
