What Is the Safest Way to Change a Fuse?
Fuse panels are still found in older Ontario homes — typically pre-1960 construction that has not had a panel upgrade. Fuses provide the same overcurrent protection function as circuit breakers, but they are one-time devices: when a fuse blows, it must be replaced. Changing a fuse safely requires understanding why it blew before replacing it.
Before You Change the Fuse
- Identify why the fuse blew — check if you were running too many appliances on the circuit, if there was a visible spark or burning smell, or if the fuse blew immediately when you turned something on (which indicates a short circuit rather than an overload)
- If the fuse blew due to an overload, reduce the load on that circuit before replacing the fuse — unplugging devices before you reset
- If the fuse blew due to a suspected short circuit or fault, do not replace it until the fault is identified. A replacement fuse will blow again immediately, and repeated attempts can damage wiring
Changing the Fuse Safely
- Stand on a dry surface — not wet or damp ground. Do not stand in water or on wet flooring near the panel
- Use only one hand inside the panel if possible — keep the other hand at your side or behind your back to reduce the risk of current flowing through your chest if you contact an energized component
- Use the correct amperage replacement fuse — never substitute a higher-rated fuse to stop it from blowing. This is a serious fire hazard: a 20-amp fuse in a 15-amp circuit allows the wire to overheat before the fuse blows
- Use Type P (tamper-resistant) fuses in 15-amp and 20-amp sockets to prevent over-fusing
