What Are the Signs of Rust Inside a Breaker Box?
Rust inside a breaker box indicates moisture intrusion — and moisture in an electrical panel is a serious hazard. Rust on breakers, bus bars, or the panel enclosure means water has been present, and water in a panel creates corrosion, arc paths, and the risk of ground faults that the panel’s own breakers cannot protect against.
What Rust Looks Like
- Orange or reddish-brown staining on the inside of the panel door or enclosure walls
- Rust streaks running downward from cable entry points — a sign that water is entering through conduit or cable knockout openings
- Corroded breaker handles or discoloured metal on the breaker bodies
- White or chalky mineral deposits alongside rust — indicating repeated wet-dry cycles from condensation or slow leaks
- Rust on the main lugs, neutral bar, or ground bar
Why It Is Dangerous
- Corroded connections have higher resistance and generate heat under load — a primary cause of arcing and electrical fires at the panel
- Rust on breaker mechanisms can cause breakers to stick in the on position and fail to trip during an overload or fault
- Water that has reached the panel may have wicked along cables into walls, corroding connections at outlets and junction boxes downstream
- A panel with active moisture intrusion will continue to degrade unless the source is identified and sealed
What to Do
Do not attempt to dry out or clean a rusted panel yourself. The panel enclosure must be de-energized at the utility before safe interior access is possible, and only a licensed electrician can safely inspect and replace corroded components.
