Can You Plug a Surge Protector Into an Extension Cord?
Plugging a surge protector into an extension cord — daisy-chaining power strips — is unsafe and prohibited by most electrical codes, including the Ontario Electrical Safety guidelines. The combination multiplies the number of devices that can be connected to a single circuit, creating overload risk and bypassing the protection mechanisms both devices provide.
Why It Is Dangerous
- A surge protector is designed to connect directly to a wall outlet — its surge suppression components are rated for the outlet’s voltage and the circuit’s amperage at that point. Connecting through an extension cord adds resistance and changes the impedance the surge suppressor sees
- The extension cord becomes the bottleneck — devices drawing power through the chain load the cord, which may overheat before the circuit breaker trips
- Multiple surge protectors or power bars chained together are a leading cause of office and home electrical fires, particularly where computers, monitors, and other electronics are clustered
- Most extension cords and power bars are not rated for stacking — manufacturers and the Ontario Fire Marshal cite daisy-chaining as a fire hazard
