What Is the National Electrical Code (NEC)?

What Is the National Electrical Code (NEC)?

The National Electrical Code (NEC) is the United States standard for safe electrical installation, published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and updated every three years. In Canada, the equivalent document is the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), published by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Ontario electricians follow the Ontario Electrical Code, which adopts the CEC with Ontario-specific amendments. If you are doing electrical work in Ontario, the relevant code is the Ontario Electrical Code — not the NEC.

Ontario Electrical Code vs. NEC

  • The Ontario Electrical Code is based on the CEC (Canadian Electrical Code), not the NEC — rules, wire gauge systems (AWG), and product standards differ in important ways
  • Products listed to UL (US) standards are not automatically accepted in Ontario — Ontario requires CSA, cUL, or other Canadian-accepted certification marks
  • AFCI and GFCI requirements, service entry rules, and permitted wiring methods differ between the NEC and the Ontario Electrical Code
  • Online DIY guides based on the NEC may conflict with Ontario requirements — always verify against the Ontario Electrical Code or consult a licensed Ontario electrician

Who Enforces Electrical Codes in Ontario

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) enforces the Ontario Electrical Code. ESA inspectors review permitted electrical work, issue compliance orders, and investigate electrical fires and failures. All electrical work requiring a permit must be done by or under the supervision of a Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC). EZSMART is a Licensed Electrical Contractor in Ontario and ensures all work meets the current Ontario Electrical Code. Contact us for any residential or commercial electrical project.
