What Is a Junction Box and Where Can It Be Hidden?

A junction box is an electrical enclosure that houses wire splices and connections. Junction boxes protect the connections from physical damage and contain any arc or fire that might occur at a faulty connection. Every wire splice or connection in an electrical system must be made inside an approved junction box — you cannot make a splice inside a wall cavity without an enclosure.

Where Junction Boxes Must Be Accessible

Ontario Electrical Code requires that all junction boxes remain accessible after installation. This means a junction box cannot be permanently covered by drywall, insulation, or any other material that would require demolition to access it. “Accessible” means a person can reach the box without removing any permanent building structure — opening an access panel, a ceiling tile, or a removable cover qualifies; cutting drywall does not.

Acceptable Ways to Conceal a Junction Box

• Install a blank cover plate on the box and leave it visible — covered but accessible
• Place the box behind a removable access panel in a wall or ceiling
• Install in an unfinished basement or attic where the box is reachable without demolition
• Use an extension ring and a recessed blank cover that sits flush with the finished surface and can be removed with a screwdriver

What Is Not Allowed

Drywalling over a junction box without providing an access point is a code violation. This is a common defect found during home inspections and can require opening walls to correct.
