Can You Run Power to an Island Through the Floor?

Can You Run Power to an Island Through the Floor?

Yes — running power to a kitchen island through the floor is a common and code-compliant method in Ontario. This approach routes the circuit from the electrical panel up through the floor framing and into the island base. It avoids exposed conduit on walls or ceilings and keeps the installation clean. The work requires an ESA permit in Ontario because kitchen island circuits are dedicated branch circuits under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

Code Requirements for Kitchen Island Circuits

  • Kitchen islands with a countertop of 300 mm x 300 mm (12″ x 12″) or larger require at least one receptacle outlet
  • The circuit feeding island receptacles is typically a dedicated 20-amp kitchen circuit
  • GFCI protection is required for all kitchen countertop receptacles, including island outlets
  • Outlets must be installed on the side or end of the island or in a pop-up style — not on the top horizontal surface where spills can directly contact receptacles

How the Floor Penetration Works

The circuit runs from the panel, through the basement ceiling or crawl space, and exits through a hole drilled in the subfloor directly beneath the island. The cable is typically fed into the island cavity and connected to a receptacle mounted on the side panel of the island. The floor penetration must be properly sealed and protected — the cable should be protected with a conduit sleeve or bushing where it passes through the floor to prevent damage from movement or sharp edges.

Floating Islands

If the island is not fixed to the floor (a movable or rolling island), hardwired electrical is not appropriate. These islands should use a retractable cord reel or be placed near an existing outlet. Fixed islands can have permanent hardwired connections; moveable ones cannot.

EZSMART installs kitchen island circuits across Ontario. Contact us to get your island wired properly with a permit and GFCI protection.
