A smart thermostat is unlikely to ruin a furnace when installed correctly and used with a compatible system. However, certain wiring issues — particularly related to the common wire (C-wire) — can cause a furnace control board to malfunction or fail over time if the wrong type of thermostat is connected without the proper wiring. Here is what you need to know.
Most smart thermostats require a common wire (C-wire) to maintain continuous low-voltage power. The C-wire provides a return path and allows the thermostat to power its Wi-Fi radio and electronics without draining the heating system. Older homes often have no C-wire, leading some smart thermostats to use power stealing — drawing a small current through the heating circuit.
The problem: power stealing can interfere with some furnace control boards, causing short-cycling, erratic behavior, or in rare cases, premature control board failure. High-efficiency furnaces with complex control boards are most at risk.
