How to Install Lutron Caseta Smart Switches

Lutron Caseta is one of the most popular smart switch systems in Canada, known for reliable wireless performance using Lutron’s proprietary Clear Connect RF technology — and importantly, for working without a neutral wire in most configurations. Here is how Caseta installation works and what to know before you start.

Step 1: Turn Off the Breaker

Turn off the circuit breaker that powers the switch you are replacing. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm there is no voltage at the switch before touching any wires.

Step 2: Remove the Existing Switch

Remove the cover plate and unscrew the existing switch. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything.

Step 3: Identify the Wires

• Hot (black) — brings power into the switch
• Load (black) — carries power to the light fixture
• Ground (green or bare copper) — required for Caseta
• Neutral (white) — present in some boxes; Caseta can use it but does not require it

Step 4: Connect the Caseta Switch

Connect the black wire to the HOT terminal, the load wire to the LOAD terminal, and ground to the green screw. If a neutral wire is present, connect it to the NEUTRAL terminal.

Step 5: Mount and Set Up

Mount the switch, restore power, and pair the switch with the Lutron app through the Lutron Smart Bridge. Caseta uses Clear Connect RF rather than Wi-Fi, making it more reliable than Wi-Fi switches.
