A dishwasher that needs to be hardwired rather than plugged in is a straightforward electrical job — but it involves running a dedicated circuit, connecting to a junction box under the unit, and working inside your main panel. In Ontario, this work requires an ESA permit and a licensed electrician. This guide explains exactly what the process involves so you know what to expect and can prepare accordingly.
Most dishwashers in Canadian homes are hardwired — connected directly to a dedicated circuit in the electrical panel through a junction box under the unit rather than plugged into a wall outlet. Some newer dishwasher models come with a power cord and can be plugged in, but the majority of built-in models require direct wiring. Understanding the process helps you prepare the right materials and schedule the work correctly alongside your kitchen installation.
Hardwiring a dishwasher requires running a new branch circuit from your electrical panel, which requires an ESA permit under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC). This is not homeowner-DIY work under Ontario rules — it involves working inside a live panel, running cable through finished spaces, and making connections inside an appliance junction box. A licensed electrician must pull the permit and perform the work. The inspection that follows confirms the circuit is correctly wired and protected before the dishwasher goes into service.
Dishwashers in Ontario require a dedicated 15A or 20A, 120V circuit — one circuit that serves only the dishwasher and nothing else. The OESC requires dedicated circuits for dishwashers because they draw significant current during the heating element cycle (typically 7–12A continuously), and sharing a circuit with other kitchen loads risks nuisance tripping and conductor overheating.
The minimum wire size for a 15A dedicated dishwasher circuit is 14 AWG copper (protected by a 15A breaker). A 20A circuit uses 12 AWG copper. Most licensed electricians in Ontario install a 20A circuit for dishwashers to provide adequate headroom for the heating element load and to future-proof the circuit for higher-draw replacement appliances. The work involves three distinct steps: running the circuit, connecting at the dishwasher, and making up the panel connection.
Running the circuit. A 12/2 NMD90 cable (or equivalent) runs from the electrical panel to the space beneath the dishwasher opening in the cabinet. In new construction or a renovation with open walls, this cable runs through wall cavities. In a finished kitchen, the electrician may need to fish the wire through finished walls, drill through cabinet kick plates, or run the cable in surface-mounted conduit. The cable enters the dishwasher’s electrical compartment through a strain relief connector on the access panel at the bottom front of the unit.
Connecting at the dishwasher. The dishwasher has a junction box behind its lower access panel, typically on the left or right side of the unit. The supply cable connects to the dishwasher’s lead wires — hot to hot (black to black), neutral to neutral (white to white), and ground to the ground wire or grounding screw in the junction box. These connections are made with appropriately-sized wire nuts or push-in connectors rated for the wire gauge used. The junction box cover must be replaced after connections are made — leaving it open violates OESC requirements for covered wiring compartments.
Panel connection. At the panel, the electrician installs a new single-pole 15A or 20A breaker and connects the circuit. The OESC (Rule 26-700) requires GFCI protection for dishwasher circuits in Ontario. This protection can be provided by a GFCI circuit breaker at the panel, a GFCI outlet wired into the circuit (if the dishwasher is plug-in), or through a GFCI device in the supply path. Most electricians in Ontario install a GFCI breaker for hardwired dishwashers because it provides protection for the entire circuit and is easier to test from the panel. GFCI breakers cost more than standard breakers, but the protection they provide — against shock from water contact near an appliance installed directly beside a sink — is the reason the code requires them.
If your dishwasher trips its GFCI repeatedly, the most common causes are a small ground fault in the dishwasher’s heating element or control board, moisture in the junction box connection, or a nuisance-trip GFCI breaker that is too sensitive for the motor inrush current on startup. Some dishwasher manufacturers now sell units with factory-installed power cords that plug into a standard outlet under the sink. This is permitted in Ontario provided the outlet is on a dedicated circuit, is GFCI-protected, and is accessible without moving the dishwasher (the outlet must be reachable for the dishwasher to be safely disconnected for service). If you are doing a kitchen renovation, schedule the dishwasher circuit before cabinets are installed — running wire through open walls is far easier and cheaper than fishing through finished cabinetry. The electrician should stub out the circuit in the dishwasher bay before the cabinet goes in, and return to make the final connection once the dishwasher is in position. The most common complication we see when hardwiring a dishwasher in an existing kitchen is finding that the original installer shared the dishwasher circuit with the garbage disposal or with a counter outlet — something that was common in older installations and is not compliant with current OESC requirements. When we pull the panel to add a dishwasher circuit, we almost always end up identifying two or three other kitchen circuit issues at the same time: an undersized wire on the disposal, a missing GFCI on the counter circuit near the sink, or a 15A breaker on a 12 AWG circuit that was previously upgraded without changing the breaker.
