Exposed electrical conduit on a garage wall, utility room ceiling, or exterior surface can look industrial and unfinished. Painting it is a common request — and in most cases it is allowed, but there are a few rules that determine when it is safe and when it creates a code problem.
Yes, you can paint electrical conduit in most situations. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC 28th Edition) does not prohibit painting conduit, and the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) does not restrict it either — provided the paint does not interfere with the conduit’s function, markings, or the ability to identify the wiring system. The practical restrictions come from conduit type, paint choice, and whether painting conceals a required identification system.
Rigid metal conduit (RMC), intermediate metal conduit (IMC), and electrical metallic tubing (EMT) can all be painted with standard latex or oil-based paint. Steel conduit is a substrate paint adheres to well, and painting it does not affect its electrical grounding continuity or mechanical protection properties. PVC conduit (electrical non-metallic tubing) can also be painted, but requires a paint formulated to bond to plastic — standard primers will peel off PVC within a season if they are not plastic-specific. Flexible metal conduit (FMC) and liquid-tight flexible conduit can be painted but the corrugated surface holds paint unevenly and often looks worse painted than bare.
If your conduit runs underground or through a wet location, painting the exterior does not affect its IP rating or listing. However, painting over conduit fittings, couplings, and connector hubs is not recommended — paint can seep into threads and bonding surfaces, making future disassembly difficult and potentially compromising watertight connections. Three situations make painting conduit inadvisable or code-problematic in Ontario:
Clean the conduit surface first — EMT and RMC often have a light oil coating from manufacturing that prevents paint adhesion. Wipe with a degreaser or isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. For metal conduit, apply a rust-inhibiting primer before the topcoat, especially in garages or basements where humidity cycles can promote rust under the paint over time. For PVC, use a plastic-bonding primer (Krylon Fusion or equivalent) before any topcoat.
Mask conduit fittings, boxes, and any breaker panel knockouts before painting. Tape over open conduit ends to prevent paint entry. Apply paint in thin coats — thick single-coat applications on round conduit sag and leave runs. Two thin coats of a satin or semi-gloss finish are more durable than one thick coat and look cleaner on the cylindrical surface. In a utility room, semi-gloss is preferable because it wipes clean and resists the condensation and grease that accumulate in those environments.
If conduit runs through walls and is only exposed in a finished area, paint it to match the wall colour. Conduit in a utility room or workshop can match the wall for a cleaner look, or remain bare metal — either is code-compliant as long as the conduit is in good condition. Shed wiring in Ontario commonly uses conduit on interior walls rather than in-wall cable because it is easier to install without insulation barriers. Painted conduit in a workshop shed looks finished and is a common homeowner request. The same rules apply — clean, prime, paint — but verify your shed panel has adequate clearance space around it before painting conduit that runs to the panel. The OESC and Ontario building code require 1 metre of clear working space in front of panels, and painting does not change that requirement. When we install surface-mounted conduit in finished spaces — basements converted to living areas, garage workshops, laundry rooms — we almost always paint it before the customer moves their storage in, because painting conduit after the room is furnished is tedious. The best time to paint conduit is before the wires are pulled and before the room is in use, so you can roll a primer and topcoat without worrying about masking every wire. If you are doing a basement finish and plan to surface-run conduit rather than fishing wire through finished walls, factor painting time into the project schedule — it adds half a day but makes a significant visual difference. One product we have had good results with is Rust-Oleum Clean Metal Primer followed by any latex topcoat — it bonds to EMT reliably and does not require sanding between coats on clean conduit.
