How to Tell If a House Has 3-Phase Power

Every so often a Toronto or GTA homeowner asks whether their house has 3-phase power — usually because they read about it online, saw the term on an appliance spec sheet, or a contractor mentioned it while pricing a workshop or an EV setup. This guide explains what 3-phase power actually is, how to tell if a house has it, and why almost no residential properties in Ontario do.

Does your house have 3-phase power?

Almost certainly not. Standard Ontario residential service is single-phase 120/240V split-phase, which is why you have both 120V outlets and 240V outlets in the same home. Real 3-phase service is a commercial and industrial standard, delivered on three energized conductors instead of two, and it is virtually never installed in detached single-family homes. If you have never had a specific 3-phase service ordered for your address, you almost certainly have single-phase.

Confusion usually comes from the fact that a household 240V outlet uses two hots and a neutral. That is not 3-phase. That is split-phase, and both hots come off the same single-phase transformer.

How to tell what you actually have

Do not open the panel deadfront yourself — that is licensed-contractor territory. The following visual checks are safe:

  • Count service conductors at the meter mast. A single-phase service has two hots and one neutral (three conductors). A 3-phase service has three hots and one neutral (four conductors).
  • Read the utility meter label. Residential meters are single-phase and typically stamped as such. 3-phase meters look larger and often carry a different form number.
  • Check the panel main breaker. A residential main breaker is a two-pole handle. A 3-phase main is a three-pole handle occupying three vertical slots.
  • Look at your utility bill. Alectra, Toronto Hydro, and Hydro One bill 3-phase services differently and often mark the rate class accordingly.
  • Check breakers along the panel. A 3-phase panel has some triple-wide breakers (rare in a house). A single-phase panel only has singles and doubles.

Single-phase 120/240V split-phase (what almost every Ontario home has)

The residential standard delivered by Ontario utilities is 120/240V single-phase split-phase. It looks like:

  • Two hot conductors, each 120V from neutral.
  • One grounded neutral conductor.

  • Between either hot and neutral: 120V, which is what your standard outlets and lighting use.

3-phase power (what commercial buildings have)

3-phase power is standard in office towers, industrial buildings, and larger commercial properties. It comes in a few common voltage combinations — 120/208V (most common in Ontario mid-rise construction) and 347/600V (typical for larger commercial and industrial). The three energized conductors are 120 electrical degrees apart and combine to power large motors, HVAC systems, and industrial equipment efficiently.

The main advantages of 3-phase in commercial contexts are smoother motor torque, smaller conductors for the same delivered power, and the ability to run large motor loads without expensive phase converters. None of those advantages apply to a single-family home in the GTA.

When (rarely) a house might have 3-phase

  • Converted commercial property. A house that was once a small shop, garage, or converted warehouse may retain its 3-phase service.
  • Home workshop with heavy machinery. Rare, and only where the property owner specifically ordered 3-phase from the utility and paid the associated service cost.
  • Multi-unit residential building on a shared service. The building itself may be 3-phase, but individual apartments still see single-phase power at the outlet.
  • Rural properties on certain feeders. Uncommon but possible.

In the vast majority of GTA homes we service, the answer is single-phase 120/240V and no upgrade to 3-phase is warranted or economical for residential use.

Why homeowners ask about it

The three most common triggers for this question are:

  • An imported tool or appliance. A European 400V industrial welder or a used commercial oven bought at auction is often 3-phase. It cannot simply be plugged into a household 240V outlet.
  • An EV charger conversation. Level 2 EV chargers in North America run on single-phase 240V. Homeowners sometimes read European or fleet-charging documentation and assume 3-phase is required. It is not for residential.
  • A workshop plan. Some heavy woodworking machines (large planers, industrial dust collectors) came with 3-phase motors. Options include swapping to a single-phase motor, using a rotary or VFD phase converter, or (rarely) paying the utility for a 3-phase service upgrade.

Cost and process to add 3-phase to a residential property

Ordering a 3-phase upgrade from the local utility for a single-family home in the GTA is expensive and slow. It typically requires:

  • A load justification (large workshop equipment, home business, or unusual load).
  • Utility engineering review to confirm the local feeder can supply 3-phase.
  • Service equipment upgrade (new transformer, service conductors, meter, and 3-phase-rated panel).
  • A significant service upgrade fee from the utility, often in the five-figure range.
  • ESA notification and inspection through an ECRA/ESA-licensed contractor.

For most residential situations, a phase converter or a motor swap is much cheaper than a service upgrade.
